Info:
The reign of Emperor Taisho (1912-1926) was an era of transition in Japan when the values of the native past and those of the seemingly foreign future emerged in stark contrast. This crisis of identity impacted everything from design patterns to gender roles, and women were at the very core of this social and cultural friction. For designers of textiles and decorative arts objects, the choice of subject and style was often between adapting old forms and motifs now sanctioned as "tradition", or the new western techniques and patterns identified with progress.
