This exhibition shows the culmination of many years of protest and international pressure in moving the country to democratic elections and astonishing efforts in national reconciliation.
The exhibition parallels the transformation in South Africa from apartheid to democracy with the civil rights struggle in the American South. Highlights include a re-creation of Nelson Mandela's jail cell and Sam Nhlengethwa's painting "Proud Nation," celebrating ten years of democracy.
"From Apartheid to Democracy: The Freedom Struggle in South Africa and the American South" was adapted by the Levine Museum of the New South, Charlotte, NC, from an exhibition created by the Apartheid Museum, Johannesburg, South Africa, with support of the John S. and James L. Foundation, the South Africa Department of Arts and Culture, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Arts and Science Council.
