Neigbors & New Homeowners- Tiffani Murray & Sidney Hankerson

Despite a down economy the real estate market still continues to see an influx of buyers.  Among those taking the plunge into one of the most sound financial investments of a lifetime are three inspiring, single, and motivational first time homebuyers 25 and under.  These young urban professionals each have their own individual story illustrating that anyone can defy the analysts with a little frugality, patience, and an eye for a good deal.

Nestled in East Atlanta, minutes from Braves Stadium and in close proximity to the shoppers paradise of Stonecrest Mall sits a lovely new home community just right for someone who is tired of their income being dispersed towards high rent and little space to move around in.  Sidney Hankerson is one former renter who decided enough was enough and purchased his 3 bedroom 2 ½ bath home at the Gates of Bouldercrest.  A third year Emory medical student, Sidney prides himself on knowing the value of a dollar.

“I wanted to build equity.  I didn’t see the point of wasting 4 years on rent.  I see my home purchase as a sound investment.”  Sidney says.

Sidney Invites You Into His Home

On Atlanta’s South side, minutes from both the airport and downtown a Spelman College as well as Georgia Tech alumnae and career Research Scientist, Valerie LaFond-Favieres,  pulls into her long driveway.  She makes her way to the shaded patio of her 2 bedroom home, with its fully remodeled kitchen and extra large bonus room.  She expected nothing but the best from her home purchase and credits her realtor for some of her success.

“I did use a realtor and looking back I would not have done it any other way. She was fabulous! I was comfortable that she understood what I wanted and needed
in a house and neighborhood and she was always prompt in replying to any of my communication. It may be that I lucked up and got a great Realtor, but I would strongly

urge people to work with one.” Valerie comments.

Valerie Stands Ready for Home Owner Responsibility

Valerie also realizes that buying a home under the age of 25 is a rarity among both women and men.

“It's still an almost surreal experience pulling into my driveway everyday. I never thought I'd be a 24 year old home owner. It was not something I really thought I would be doing as a single person, and certainly not before the age of 27.”

Buying a first home is a huge step, as the author of this article, 25 year old Tiffani Murray, knows well.  She just purchased her first home in East Atlanta, also at the Gates at Bouldercrest.  She sites the biggest challenge as finding the middle ground between location, price, and size.

“At first I was intent on living downtown, but after close examination and consultation with my realtor, I realized that for a six minute ride out of town I could get much more house for my money.”

Tiffani's Home A Few Days Before Closing

The process of buying a home is full of apprehensive moments and key milestones from mortgage qualification to inspection and closing to housewarming.  The freedom from the financial commitment of “rent” coupled with the buyer’s sense of ownership overcomes the weight of the added responsibility.  The young people profiled here have taken this crucial first step despite the economic forecast and prospects.  They are confidant in their choices and are certain that this home will be the building block of those to come.
