Info:
Washington State Jewish Historical Society and Book-It Repertory Theatre present "In the Land of Rain & Salmon, Jewish Voices of the Northwest: 1880-1920," a theatrical adaptation of "Family of Strangers, Building A Jewish Community In Washington State" and other stories.
This original theater production will bring to life some of the formative Washington state Jewish narratives in the book by Molly Cone, Howard Droker and Jacqueline Williams, as well as stories and oral histories preserved in the Washington State Jewish Archives, housed at the University of Washington Libraries Special Collections. The script follows the challenges and triumphs of Jewish families that arrived between 1880 and 1920 and played a significant role in the cultural, civic and commercial development of Washington state.
The historical society's seminal event for its Year of Washington Jews in Arts and Culture, this one-of-a-kind staged event takes place at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, which was originally Chevra Bikur Cholim synagogue, making it a very special place to hold this heritage production. The June 2 performance is the premiere of this show, which will be performed again at a later date and is available to book to tour other venues.
The adaptation of the book is by Rachel Atkins, scriptwriter for Living Voices, an educational theater company with 11 of Atkins' multi-media shows touring nationally. Annie Lareau, Book-It's director of touring, is directing the one-hour performance, which will be performed by Book-It actors.
This event is supported by: 4Culture, Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, and JTNews. This event is part of the Jewish Day of Arts and Culture, which begins with "In the Land of Rain & Salmon, Jewish Voices of the Northwest: 1880-1920" at 2 p.m. and continues at 7 p.m. with a concert, "From Strength to Strength, Songs for the Journey," by Seattle Jewish Chorale at Town Hall Seattle.
