Pleasanton's teen co-Poet Laureates are organizing their first big event, entitled 'Amplified.' It will be a staged performance and open mic evening showcasing a variety of local teens.
The event is unique in that it is a collaborative effort between both Amador and Foothill High School organizations. The new co-laureates Arany Uthayakumar and Diana Fu are excited to present this program embracing both high schools as well as other teen cultural outlets in the area. The event currently features poetry, rap and music performance, theater improv and more. Highlights include members of the award-winning Creatures of Impulse Improv team, well-known local rapper Jacob Kleinberg, and up-and-coming freestyle rapper Jay Kim. Scheduled performers include members of The Anchormen from Amador Valley High School, poets from Foothill High School's Teens for Literacy, and members of AVHS Writers Bloc.
The Pleasanton Teen Poet Laureate selection committee currently chooses one laureate from Foothill High School, and one from Amador Valley High School to occupy the post for the one year term. Laureate Arany is currently a senior at Amador Valley High School, and laureate Diana is a Foothill High School junior. Their combined duties include reciting poems at civic events such as ribbon cutting ceremonies or dedications, and to plan and implement poetry programming with the support of City of Pleasanton staff.
