Info:
You are invited to a special evening where a diverse community of at-risk youth shares their experiences of living in challenging times through their own creative written works. Guided by mythologist Michael Meade and poet Luis Rodriquez, this event brings together youth and mentors from Los Angeles area organizations including Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural, Youth Mentoring Connection, and Street Poets, Inc.
Voices of Youth serves as a forum in which the voices, feelings, imagination, and aspirations of diverse youth are recognized and celebrated. The presentation follows an intensive retreat in which youth study and practice traditional arts and write of their life-forming and life-threatening experiences. On the evening of Saturday June 22nd, the local community is invited to witness, to discuss, and to acknowledge the aspirations and efforts of their community’s own disadvantaged young people.
In this approach, disadvantaged youth are not the root of the problem instead their lives are a reflection of the serious issues that exist in society at large. When viewed this way, youth are seen as valuable change agents, with firsthand experience of the problems that our society faces. They become a necessary part of the cultural education, healing and transformation needed.
Voices of Youth inspires and empowers local disadvantaged youth, fosters cross-generational and multi-experiential dialogue, through a unique form of mentoring. Amidst troubled times, all are invited to witness their expression and hear their voices speak to a need for a stronger and more understanding community.
