Presented by GRAND PERFORMANCES at the California Plaza Water Court
Led by Todd Simon, Ethio Cali’s sublime sound is inspired by the “Golden Age” of `60s and `70s Ethio-jazz, whose inspiration is drawn from the rhythmic and melodic textures of Sudan, Somalia, Ghana, and Colombia. Ethiopia-born and Australia-based vocalist/masenqo player Dereb The Ambassador joins as a featured guest. Maghreb-born Aziz Sahmaoui deftly helms Paris’ spirited University of Gnawa. The ensemble’s innovative compositions meld trance and healing music originally from the border region between Morocco and Algeria with Senegalese, Gambian, and Malian roots. The musical moods shift from hushed, reverent tones to feverish, hypnotic dances. [complimentary bike valet]
