Pulsing drum beats, spectacular costumes, and infectious call-and-response songs will take you away to the northeast coast of Brazil. Steeped in both African and indigenous traditions, Maracatu is the dynamic, propelling rhythm of life’s celebrations. Straight off of Estrela Brilhante’s win at the 2013 Carnival Maracatu competition, this performance pairs the renowned and respected group with Brooklyn-based Nation Beat. On this premiere U.S. tour, these two groups deliver a faithfully reincarnated pageant with bold contemporary manifestations. SUPPORTED BY THE JAMES IRVINE FOUNDATION THIS TOUR OF MARACATU NAÇÃO ESTRELA BRILHANTE IS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH SOUTHERN EXPOSURE: PERFORMING ARTS OF LATIN AMERICA, A PROGRAM OF MID ATLANTIC ARTS FOUNDATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS AND THE ROBERT STERLING CLARK FOUNDATION [complimentary bike valet]
