This event is supported by Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center as part of the 17th annual United States of Asian America Festival 2014 - "The Spaces Between".
Gautam Tejas Ganeshan has been described as a "local treasure" by SF Classical Voice, "a dream...passionate, knowledgeable, mindblowing" by the Asian Art Museum, and "subversive... affecting and bold" by the East Bay Express.
Gautam inflects a tradition through himself, delivering music that expresses authenticity more than ethnicity, immediacy more than nostalgia. His concerts honor the venerable art of the song, yielding to extensive improvisations, delivered in chamber ensembles with a rhythmic rapport and a life of their own. SFJAZZ called it "new music from an old tradition."
Gautam's performances allow listeners an unprecedented experience of the structure of Carnatic music, and a natural purchase on its elaborate song forms. With texts in English, his native tongue - he was born in Texas with the middle name to show for it - his renditions offer "an incredible presence...gentle renegade perfomance" (Berkeleyside).
In recognition of his original compositions, Gautam was awarded the Creative Work Fund in 2013, and in 2008 received a commission from the San Francisco Foundation for his ensemble "New Directions in Indian Classical Music," which was billed as the "ecstatic edge of contemporary Indian classical music" at the SF International Arts Festival
As founder and director of the Sangati Center, Gautam is also "a magnet for local Indian classical musicians" (SF Chronicle). The Sangati Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that has hosted more than 400 public chamber concerts of Indian classical music in the past eight years. The Sangati Center has earned support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Alliance for California Traditional Arts, San Francisco Foundation, and others, as well as the goodwill of thousands of listeners and musicians local and abroad.
