Info:
Charles Garcia will discuss the local and European herbs Juana Briones may have likely used in her role as a curandera. While it is most likely every Hispanic woman in early California had an herb garden, it is more than likely Juana Briones also used local native herbs in her healings. Depending on weather and availability he will bring as many herbs to the discussion as possible as well as a mortar and pestle used by his own mother.
Charles Garcia is a native born California and third generation folkhealer (a curandero), learning much of his plant knowledge from this mother Martha Garcia, who learned them from her father Desidro Navarro. He is the only herbal teacher in the state who specializes in teaching traditional California Hispanic herbalism. He has been featured on NPR's Latino USA, KQED's California Report, and other public radio stations. He is also the Director of the California School of Traditional Hispanic Herbalism in Richmond, CA.
Coffee and Tea will be served from 5:45-6:15. The event begins no later than 6:15.
