RAWdance presents the 15th installation of the CONCEPT series, sharing some of the Bay Area's most intriguing choreographic voices in an informal and intimate setting. The series promises to fulfill your cravings for quality dance art while keeping your belly full of popcorn.
The CONCEPT series: 15 brings a wide array of top-notch creative talent. Jo Kreiter's Flyaway Productions performs "Torque: Dance on a Bike on a Rope," taking an ordinary bike from the Berkeley Flea Market, transforming it into a danceable object. In Risa Jaroslow's new work, four dancers investigate how we make the decisions that bring us to the point of change. Erik Wagner / Crawl Space offers a new duet, while Christian Burns shares "Improvisation #72," a solo exploration for new potentials in spontaneous choreography. Lindsey Renee Derry / L i n s d a n s performs an excerpt of her solo show POR*TRAI*TURE. Host RAWdance will share two works-in-progress. An excerpted duet from Burn In, places the company's Artistic Directors in an aggressive battle. The second in-progress extract is inspired by the life of famed mathematician Alan Turing.
RAWdance was awarded a 2014 SF Bay Guardian Goldie in large part in recognition of the vitality of the series: "An old-fashioned salon of serious fun but also serious art, the series has become one of the most congenial places to watch dance in SF." Critical Dance chimed in: "A packed house, cozy performance environment, engaging choreography, yummy snacks, genuine and inviting hosts... an evening of modern dance doesn't get much better than this." In 2012, SF Weekly named the series the "Best Way to Sample S.F.'s Contemporary Dance Scene.
The CONCEPT series is all about making dance accessible without sacrificing the art. Choreographers are encouraged to share work at any point along the creation process, from revisiting repertory to testing out a work-in-progress fresh from the studio.
