Imagine a harp shrunk to the size of a crossbow - 32 strings and brushed bronze. A woman in a sleek black boustier straps it on, plugs it in like an electric guitar and pulls sounds you never heard from a harp before: Flamenco, Blues, Hendrix-style wails and lush atmospheric soundscapes. Then she tells stories and sings in a voice compared to Carly Simon. Her one-woman show is a collection of musical short-stories with characters, narrative, and music that brings them to life.
The woman is GRAMMY(R)-Nominated recording artist Deborah Henson-Conant (DHC). The instrument, invented for her by the CAMAC company in France weighs 11-pounds and has 32 strings with whammy-type levers on each. The harp is named after her, the "DHC Light." This April she's releasing her first album in nearly 8 years!
DHC's last album received a Grammy Nomination for "Best Classical Crossover" and the companion video appeared on PBS Stations throughout the US. Since then she's written and performed three new one-woman shows, toured the world with legendary rock guitarist Steve Vai, and toured with her own solo show.
She is known as a creative pioneer and a classic entertainer, a solo performer who combines virtuosic skills with humor and theater for an unforgettable one-woman show. She combines classically-developed chops, cutting-edge playing techniques, a looper pedal, Hendrix-style distortion, and her powerful singing and storytelling voice.
DHC uses many genres to discover and expose this new instrument. She uses story to put each genre in context: from middle-aged anxiety of looking in the mirror, to the secret life of dogs or the heroism of fruit, to the romance of the sous-chef and the revenge of the dust-balls under your bed.
The New York Times credits her with "Reshaping the serenely Olympian harp into a jazz instrument. The Austin American-Statesman describes her show as "... dazzling harp playing, gorgeous jazz/pop singing, comic timing and impressive songwriting."
