Flutist Justin Lee and Cellist Anne Suda present Folk Tales, a program featuring a new commission from Bay-Area based Persian composer Shahab Paranj, folk-inspired works by Kodaly, Bartok, Debussy, Reza Vali and a trio for flute, cello and piano by Bay-Area composer Belinda Reynolds. With Pianist Anne Rainwater. Aurally inspired edible creations by Personal Chef and Caterer Tyler Davis.
The concert features celebrated folk music as well as a new commission from composer Shahab Paranj. Framing the program are two flute and cello duets from Persian composers that will set the atmosphere for the concert. The program begins with a commission from Bay-Area based composer Shahab Paranj, entitled The Unattained. Paranj bases his piece on shepherd's pipe music (shemshal) from the west of Iran (Kurdestan). Persian composer Reza Vali's work Folk Songs, Set No. 9 (1991), ends the program with a flourish of sound that extends well beyond the traditional sounds of flute and cello. Vali's work employs extended technique as well as the use of alto and bass flute, tom-tom drums, crystal glasses and vocalization in order to create a rich tapestry of Persian folk sounds.
Also on the program is Zoltan Kodaly's monumental Sonata in B minor for solo cello, Op. 8 composed in 1915. Bay-Area based pianist Anne Rainwater joins Justin Lee to perform Suite Paysanne Hongroise by Bela Bartok, the king of folk music inscription. Cellist Anne Suda joins Justin Lee and Anne Rainwater to perform Cover (1996/98), a trio by Bay-Area based composer Belinda Reynolds. This piece was chosen to enhance the folk music on the program with its captivating sounds.
A reception following the concert will be held in the courtyard of Community Music Center, featuring creations inspired by the different cultures, regions and sounds of the pieces from personal chef and caterer Tyler Davis.
