A well-known distinguished pianist and pedagogue, Namik Sultanov showcases his exceptional lyrical gifts and distinctive performance style. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, he has shown extraordinary musical talent from a very early age. Playing violin and flute, he was a serious student of composition in his youth and created more than 150 pieces that were featured at music school concerts. Although he was a "string student" at the time, he won his first prize in the music school's piano competition.
At age 12, Sultanov became deeply engrossed by Van Cliburn's stunning performance at the First Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition and began to study Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto. Practicing day and night, he soon played all three movements for Ahad Israfilzade, chief conductor of the Azerbaijan Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Israfilzade immediately asked Sultanov to play with the Philharmonic, and the triumphant concert became a big sensation.
After this success, the Azerbaijan government sponsored Namik at Russia's most prestigious conservatory, Moscow's Central Special Music School, where he received his doctorate in performance in 1973. After graduation, he was invited to join the faculty of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory as an associate professor.
Participating in numerous national festivals throughout Eastern Europe, Dr. Sultanov represented his country at the Third International Music Festival in Moscow (1985), the Fourth International Piano Festival in Istanbul (1998), the International Music Festival in Mexico City (1990) and the International Music Festival in Germany (2008).
In 1999, the Turkish Ministry of Culture formally recognized his distinguished teaching. Dr. Sultanov has been invited to serve on juries for national and international competitions and is sought after to teach master classes in Europe, Canada and the U.S. He is currently a faculty member at San Jose State University.
