Two internationally constructed interdisciplinary dance performances negotiating human presence at the edge of object, image, and place, developed in India, Japan, and the US.
"ANICONIC" by Tableau Stations is a 60 minute trio (Isak Immanuel, Surjit Nongmeikapam, Marina Fukushima) set in SOMArts expansive Bay Gallery. The work unfolds as an inquiry to the object quality of human relationships and the life of objects. "U Define" is a 20 minute solo work by Nongmeikapam/Bon (based in Manipur, India) creating a direct combine of the body and its environment, dug half into the ground of the theater's outdoor garden area.
Both works were initially developed as part of the 2013 Attakkalari India Biennial and the FACETS choreography program in Bangalore, India. This complex and inspiring environment was then layered into an ongoing process. For the work "ANICONIC", connecting to new layers created in Tokyo/Yokohama at ST Spot, and in the San Francisco Bay Area at Djerassi and Headlands Center for the Arts. "U Define" was developed further in Manipur, India and now both are being reinvestigated for site-specific undertakings at SOMArts. For this presentation, the works carry a tangled map of making, losing, and shifting. Each with their own unique points of entry and departure, they meet and sort layers of a labor of place and image-laden bodies. Representative of a new generation of movement makers and makers on the move, they present works as new maps, becoming boundless and detailed in a shifting global ecology.
Presented in part, with the support of Kenneth Rainin Foundation, Theatre Bay Area CA$H, Attakkalari FACETS Program, Djerassi Resident Artist Program, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Headlands Center for the Arts, and SOMArts Cultural Center.
