Internationally recognized writers, scholars, and students of the Asian Avant-Garde come together for three days in an experimental and creative setting to explore the mental and aesthetic health of this diasporic community.
Curated by Sean Labrador y Manzano, conference presenters include: avant-garde writer Bhanu Jacasta Kapil transgender performance artist D'Lo poet and cognitive scientist Pireeni Sundaralingam and writer and visual artist Truong Tran, among many other critical and cross-disciplinary voices.
From its beginnings in individual writers and artists to its articulation as a movement, the Asian Avant-Garde remains loosely defined and misunderstood by the much larger experimental poetic and arts community. This symposium confronts trauma that results from miscegenation, cultural schizophrenia, otherness, aggression, and privilege, and explores the subject of the Asian Avant-Garde moving toward catharsis and healing by any means necessary.
Hosted by the MFA Program at California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), the conference is in keeping with the university's mission of forging understanding between East and West.
