Artistic Director Maurya Kerr and her San Francisco based dance company tinypistol present two works: the world premiere of beast and the reprisal of Wantful (May 23, 2014) at ODC Theater, September 25-27.
Kerr, who has always been intrigued by otherness and how we don't fit in, in ways that are both visible and invisible, describes her philosophy as 'anti-pretty.' In this same vein, Kerr's new work beast reconsiders the relationship of "pretty" and "ugly" through a feminist, animalist lens that reveals and exalts the grace within the beast.
Kerr says of her new work: "beast dismantles our conventional understanding of beauty by exalting the grace within the "ugly." Is beauty the prerequisite to relevance, or can dance be the means whereby we recognize ourselves in the struggles and humanity we witness onstage?"
Kerr's second work, Wantful is a lush and unromantic study in duets, full of privacy, preemptive nostalgia, and heavy hope.
"Kerr first grabbed our attention as a principal dancer for Alonzo King LINES Ballet. Through her own company, tinypistol, Kerr has condensed and distilled loose-limbed ferocity and fierce grace." - - SF Weekly
