Opening reception Tue, Sept 9, 7-9pm exhibit September 9 - December 13, 2014
The CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco will launch its new artistic program on September 9, 2014, with an exhibition of new work by Markus Schinwald.
Markus Schinwald (b. 1973) inaugurates a new exhibition program at the CCA Wattis Institute that emphasizes major solo shows and new productions. He presents an exhibition of new work in a site-specific installation that takes over the entire space at the Wattis. This exhibition is co-organized by Anthony Huberman, Wattis Director and Chief Curator, and Jenny Gheith, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at SFMOMA, and it is part of SFMOMA's New Work exhibition series and SFMOMA On the Go programming.
Markus Schinwald is an artist living and working in Vienna. His work includes sculpture, painting, photography, video, performance art, and site-specific installation. Consistent throughout his work is an interest in the prosthetic as an object, a technology, and a mental space.
"Our New Work series has always showcased the most forward-looking art of today, and we're thrilled to present the latest installment in partnership with CCA," says Gary Garrels, SFMOMA Elise S. Haas Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture. "Markus Schinwald is an exciting choice for this collaboration. His site-specific installations, which have rarely been shown in the United States, explore the potential and the limitations of the body in psychologically and oddly humorous ways."
Schinwald's new site-specific installation at the Wattis involves an ambitious architectural intervention along with new paintings and sculptures, synthesizing many of his artistic approaches in the development of a new direction for his work.
