For the 32nd season of Free Shakespeare in the Park the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival presents 'The Taming of the Shrew', featuring plenty of Shakespearean twists, hilarious clowns and ridiculous disguises, along with a subversive and challenging love story.
Artistic Director Rebecca J. Ennals takes the helm for the first time as director of Free Shakespeare in the Park with Shakespeare's oft-maligned comedy. Is it a feminist rallying cry, a sexist throwback, or maybe, like most things in Shakespeare, a bit of both? Using both the familiar main story and the rarely-performed Christopher Sly framing device, we'll ask: What does it mean to be a Shrew? What is appropriate behavior for men and women? What makes a good marriage? Audience members of all ages will enjoy the outrageous clowning, witty wordplay, and crazy plot twists as Kate and Petruccio negotiate their surprisingly modern relationship. Who is the bigger Shrew? You decide!
Each performance is preceded by a Green Show, 'The Taming School', starting at 1:30. This 15-minute presentation provides additional background on the play in a fun and engaging format suitable for all ages.
No tickets or reservations are needed for these complimentary shows. Bring your family, friends, a blanket, and a picnic to enjoy professional theater at no charge!
NOTE: there will be additional shows in San Francisco at McLaren Park's Garcia Amphitheater on Sept 20 & 21 at 2:00 pm.
"Free Shakespeare in the Park has become a highly anticipated summer event and we're proud to be such a beloved tradition in the community," says Toby Leavitt, Executive Director of San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. "This summer's show is great fun for the whole family and we look forward to greeting newcomers as well as long-time fans in the park."
