INTRICATE LAYERS is an exhibition of painting-like artwork created entirely from photographs and fused into metal sheets. Alaskan born photographer, Damon McLay, creates these works using a technique he calls photo layering. Each layer is carefully crafted to resonate with the artist's vision. The photos are then made translucent and digitally fused together through a meticulous process that allows the images to merge, interact and transform one another. Each work is finalized by infusing dyes directly into a specially coated metal sheet that is waterproof, fade-resistant and has 2-4 times the image stability of traditional photo paper. This results in unbelievable clarity, vibrance and luminescence. This is then mounted on an inset frame which floats the print away from the wall allowing the viewer to focus on the rich detail in the finished artwork.
Artist's Statement: I'm a gay man who was raised in a fundamentalist religion by a conservative family located in a small rural town. I remember the hour of day, the weather outside and the exact place I was standing when my 10 year old self made a conscious realization that it wasn't safe for me to express who I was. After spending so much of my life hiding, I desperately long to be seen. I crave to unashamedly celebrate the passions that make me who I am and to unleash the whimsical child I locked away so many years ago. I created this artwork as part of my ongoing journey.
This collection is about engaging life with complete transparency and embracing our entire range of experience as human beings. You may recognize not only the beauty of a man's body, but also acknowledge that man's unique experiences and even discover the magnificent beauty in the complex internal textures created throughout his life. It is within those intricate layers that we begin to acknowledge and appreciate the remarkable being that inhabits that body.
