Info:
Maya Beiser: Uncovered is a collection of startling classic rock tunes, re-imagined and re- contextualized, in stunning performances by Maya Beiser. Her performance in Los Angeles follows shortly after the August 2014 release of Uncovered, the album. A "cover tune" can be an homage to the original, but these "uncovers," in new arrangements by Evan Ziporyn, attempt to do more - to evoke the unprecedented power of the music of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Janis Joplin, Howlin' Wolf, and AC/DC.
Maya juxtaposes these handpicked rock classics with Michael Harrison's epic Just Ancient Loops, performed live with a film by Bill Morrison that presents a unique view of the heavens. Just Ancient Loops unveils every aspect of the cello - from its most mysterious harmonics to its earthiest, rhythmic pizzicatos. Composer and Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche's new piece for Maya, Three Parts Wisdom, and David Lang's take on Lou Reed's Heroin complete the evening. Maya's performance explores the juncture where the spiritual, traditional, contemporary, urban, and popular culture meet.
Maya's performances in Uncovered are incendiary, in line with New York magazine's assessment that "Beiser is not the sort of musician who zigzags around the planet playing catalog music for polite and sleepy audiences. She throws down the gauntlet in every program."
Raised in the Galilee Mountains in Israel and surrounded with the music and rituals of Jews, Muslims and Christians while immersed in the study of classical cello repertoire, Maya has dedicated her work to reinventing solo cello performance in the classical arena. Catch her in Uncovered and hear for yourself. For more information visit www.mayabeiser.com
