Think: The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes...and we're in the heart of classic Motown. Pleasanton's Firehouse Arts Center kicks off the 5th season of its popular Cabaret Series with the return engagement of Top Shelf, the Bay Area's big entertainment cornerstone. Famous for their sell-out hit shows such as Motown Madness and Disco Fever, TS pays tribute to the legendary music of Motown. One show only, on Sunday, September 14, at 3:00 p.m.
Motown: The iconic moniker, combining "motor" and "town," is the nickname for Detroit, Michigan, where it all started. With an $800 loan from his family, Berry Gordy Jr. established Motown Records in January 1959, in partnership with William "Smokey" Robinson, who was at the time lead singer with The Miracles. Robinson went on to write hit after hit for many of the other acts Gordy aggressively brought on-board. Within a few years, Motown Records was selling more singles and releasing more hits than any other record company: 79 records in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 record chart between 1960 and 1969.
In its classic era, the seminal music scene of the 1960s, Motown's artists were among the most popular across the globe, establishing a standard of excellence and sophistication that has never been surpassed. Calling itself "The Sound of Young America," the instantly recognizable and often-imitated Motown Sound blended distinctively passionate singers, the call and response vocal arrangements of the African-American church tradition, pop music sensibilities, jazz virtuosity and irresistible rhythms, all melded together by timeless songwriting.
This show is part of the Firehouse Arts Center's Cabaret Series, produced and presented by Esses Productions. The series concerts always sell out, so advance ticket purchase is recommended.
