"Sounds of the Streets: A historical and musical tribute to Latin Rock" takes center stage on Saturday. Sept. 27, from 8-11 p.m., at Brava Theater, 2781-24th St., in San Francisco.
Presented by Accion Latina, a Mission District-based non-profit cultural organization.
A one-of-a-kind memorabilia exhibit of Latin Rock legend Carlos Santana courtesy of Dr. Rock and Dr. Rock Inc. kicks-off the evening. The exhibit is followed by a sound-slide Latin Rock history presentation by College of San Mateo Professor Rudy Ramirez.
The show closes with the Mission Street All Stars performing a repertoire of classic Latin Rock sounds. The band features "El Professor" Ramirez, on guitar, Walter Guevara on keys and vocal, Tony Rodriguez on bass and vocal, Greg Austin on drums, Ron Messina on congas, and Malo legend Leo Rosales on congas and timbales. It also features dancers Jules Hough and Isabella Mata El Sol.
But there's more. Following the concert, the Latin Rock band Lumbre will treat everyone to a mini dance-concert in the Brava lobby.
Historically, the Latin Rock phenomena took root in the US on Aug. 16, 1969 when Santana performed at Woodstock in front of a half million concert-goers. "It was a proud moment," Ramirez said. "We became born-again Latinos." Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $20 at the door, $15 in advance, and $12 for students and seniors. Advance tickets are available at Brava.org. All of the proceeds benefit San Francisco's Latino newspaper, El Tecolote, named "Best Community Newspaper of 2014" by SF Weekly.
