San Francisco Performances is pleased to present Israel's stunning contemporary dance company Batsheva as it celebrates a half century of visionary work. Under the artistic leadership of choreographer Ohad Naharin for nearly 25 years, Batsheva is one of the world's great companies, known for cerebral and visceral works that feature profoundly expressive movement vocabulary and thrilling theatricality. The full-length evening piece to be performed in San Francisco, Sadeh21, means "field" in Hebrew: as in field of study, of action. Naharin's clever set of movement studies composed of 21 segments, is danced to the music of Brian Eno and David Darling, and is deeply rooted in his own liberating style that enables the dancers to access an amazingly fluidity, breadth of inventive movement and a seemingly different way of being in the world.
Batsheva has embarked on a world tour in honor of its 50th anniversary season which includes an intensive six-city U.S schedule with their final performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
Hailed as one of the world's preeminent contemporary choreographers, Ohad Naharin assumed the role of Artistic Director in 1990. Naharin is also the originator of the innovative movement language, Gaga, which has enriched his extraordinary movement invention, revolutionized the company's training, and emerged as a growing international force in the larger field of movement practices for both dancers and non-dancers. Here in San Francisco classes in Gaga are currently being taught at the SF Conservatory of Dance, Shawl-Anderson and LINES Ballet Dance Center.
Batsheva Dance Company was founded as a repertory company in 1964 by the Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild, who enlisted Martha Graham as its first artistic adviser.
San Francisco Performances presents Batsheva for the fourth time. Batsheva previously appeared in 2004, 2006 and 2012.
