Beats & Bridges: A Global Day of the Dead Block Party Across the First St. Bridge is presented by OneBeat and the Boyle Heights Farmers Market. This Dia de los Muertos block party features original music from the OneBeat fellows and collaborations with local performers and youth from both sides of the First Street Bridge. Throughout the night storytellers, performances, and community Day of the Dead altars will highlight shared stories between Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights communities. The block party will be followed by a Halloween dance after-party across the street at the M Bar, featuring local Cumbia band A Poco No, plus DJ sets from OneBeat fellows and local DJs.
This Dia de los Muertos event is a global block party calling together neighbors from both sides of the First Street Bridge & both sides of the globe to celebrate the bridges that connect our stories, ancestors & communities.
This month, OneBeat, an adventurous new model of cultural diplomacy, has brought 25 musicians (ages 19-35) from 17 countries around the world to Los Angeles to collaboratively compose, produce, and perform original music and develop strategies for social engagement through music. Three public performances by OneBeat Fellows in LA are scheduled - Improvising Democracy: Showcase at Sonos Studio on Wednesday, October 22 at 7pm at Sonos Studio, Beats & Bridges: A Global Day of the Dead Themed Block Party Across the First St. Bridge on Friday, October 24 at 7pm at Mariachi Plaza, and OneBeat Living Room Concert on Saturday, October 25 at 8pm at Art Share L.A.
Now in its third year, OneBeat is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, produced by Bang on a Can's Found Sound Nation. OneBeat is an incubator for music-based social entrepreneurship where innovative musicians from around the world launch collaborative projects designed to make a positive impact on local and global communities.
