Info:
Cellist Maya Beiser brings her newest production, All Vows, to Sixth & I Historic Synagogue presented by Washington Performing Arts. Featuring performances by Maya with Wilco's drummer Glenn Kotche and bassist Gyan Riley, All Vows explores the dichotomy between the physical, external world we inhabit and the inner landscape of our secret selves.
The first half of All Vows begins with a set of "uncovers" crafted by Evan Ziporyn and featured on Maya's latest album Uncovered, a collection of stunningly re-contextualized classic rock. Maya goes deep inside music by Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Janis Joplin, and Howlin Wolf to reveal the core of each song as a musical masterpiece. Uncovered was top 10 on the Billboard Classical Chart upon release in August. Composer and drummer Glenn Kotche of Wilco contributes Three Parts Wisdom, a new work written for Maya that combines solo cello with multiple pre-recorded cello tracks, evoking the experience of the individual alone and as part of a collective. Composer David T. Little has written Hellhound for Maya, a new work based on legendary bluesman Robert Johnson's 1937 song Hellhound On My Trail.
The second half begins with Mohammed Fairouz's new Kol Nidrei for cello and prerecorded sounds. Then Michael Gordon's All Vows reimagines Kol Nidrei entirely. Tsmindao Ghmerto (Holy God), arranged by Evan Ziporyn, is based on a 13th century Sanctus from the orthodox Georgian Liturgy. Finally, Composer Michael Harrison's Just Ancient Loops unveils every aspect of the cello - from its most glorious and mysterious harmonics to earthy, rhythmic pizzicatos.
Maya Beiser has captivated audiences worldwide with her virtuosity, eclectic repertoire, and relentless quest to redefine her instrument's boundaries. The Boston Globe declares, "With virtuoso chops, rock-star charisma, and an appetite for pushing her instrument to the edge of avant-garde adventurousness, Maya Beiser is the post-modern diva of the cello."
