Info:
Tepfer is familiar to local jazz fans through his appearances in Bay Area clubs. Classically trained from an early age while obsessively improvising on the piano, he has emerged as a gifted artist who finds inspiration and innovation between two musical worlds. His San Francisco solo debut offers his revelatory take on Bach's "Goldberg Variations", paired with his own improvised variations of the variations.
"This is not a stunt, but a fresh musical exploration. Mr. Tepfer invites you to hear this masterpiece through his ears. I bet Bach would recognize a kindred spirit in Mr. Tepfer." -The New York Times
Born in Paris to American parents, pianist-composer Tepfer has translated his bi-cultural identity into an exploration of music that ignores stylistic bounds. He has received broad praise for his "riveting, inspired, fresh musical exploration" (New York Times). He has worked with the leading lights in jazz, including extensively with saxophone luminary Lee Konitz, while releasing seven albums as a leader.
Tepfer discusses his program:
"Bach is very thorough. In, say, Variation 26, when a fast line happens in the right hand and a slower melody happens in the left hand, with chords, he will always reverse it so that you get the same experience with the other hand. That wouldn't be the case if the Goldberg Variations weren't studies... The "Goldbergs" aren't just serious and dramatic they are also funny and light. There is a whole world in this music.
With the faster variations I had to really think about how I could convey the spirit of Bach's virtuosity in my own way. With the slow ones, I just sat down, and after playing Bach's variation, started improvising. I think some of them are the most honest musical statements I've ever made, often just first takes. I'm proud of that because one of cool things about improvisation is its Zen aspect the best-case scenario is the music just flowing out of you."
