Info:
The Cypress String Quartet will perform at Ganz Hall, a stunning architectural gem from the late 1890s and a historical landmark at Roosevelt University. The Cypress' concert will include music from the quartet's upcoming European tour, which follows their appearance in Chicago: Antonin Dvorak's String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96 ("American"), Charles Tomlinson Griffes' Two Sketches Based on Indian Themes, Samuel Barber's String Quartet in B Minor, Op. 11, and a Chicago premiere of 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts' Lento Assai. All of the works are included on the Cypress's American Album, reissued on AVIE Records in 2013. In addition, the Cypress will perform selections from Dvo?ak's Cypresses (the works from which the quartet takes its name).
The Cypress' program in Chicago celebrates Dvo?ak's efforts to define and develop an American sound, highlighted in his String Quartet No. 12. American composer Kevin Puts' Lento Assai was premiered by the Cypress at the Library of Congress in Washington DC in 2009. Charles Tomlinson Griffes' Two Sketches is based on two Native American songs, on which Cypress did a great deal of research. They spoke with an elder of the Chippewa tribe, and found that the first sketch is based on the "Chippewa Farewell Song," and the second is part of a Hopi festival. Barber's String Quartet is most well-known for its second Adagio movement. In his own words, Barber knew that the movement was "a knockout" as soon as he finished it.
Known for its elegant performances, the Cypress String Quartet has been praised by Gramophone for its "artistry of uncommon insight and cohesion," and its sound has been called "beautifully proportioned and powerful" by The Washington Post.
