ACME, the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, will give a centennial tribute concert to iconic Polish composer Andrzej Panufnik, presented by the Polish Cultural Institute New York and Le Poisson Rouge. The centerpieces of ACME's program, which covers four decades of strikingly beautiful Polish chamber music, are Panufnik's String Quartet No. 2, "Messages" and his Song to the Virgin Mary, a work originally for a cappella voices which the composer arranged for string sextet. Panufnik's "Messages" recalls the composer's childhood experience of pressing his ear to telephone poles and listening to the sounds of the suspended wires in the wind, which he considered one of his earliest artistic pursuits. Again drawing on memories, in Song to the Virgin Mary, Panufnik recalls Polish peasants' devotion to the Madonna in a work that invokes both folk music and plainchant. ACME pairs these works with two pieces by composer Alesksander Laso? - his String Quartet No. 4 and Deciso e affetuoso for solo cello.
ACME, which is celebrating its tenth season in 2014-2015, is dedicated to the outstanding performance of masterworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, primarily the work of American composers. The ensemble presents fresh work by living composers alongside the classics of the contemporary. ACME's dedication to new music extends across genres, and has earned them a reputation among both classical and rock crowds. NPR calls them "contemporary new music dynamos," and The New York Times describes ACME's performances as "vital," "brilliant," and "electrifying." Time Out New York reports, "[Artistic Director Clarice] Jensen has earned a sterling reputation for her fresh, inclusive mix of minimalists, maximalists, eclectics and newcomers."
ACME players for this concert are Clarice Jensen, cello & artistic director Yuki Numata Resnick and Ben Russell, violins Caleb Burhans and Isabel Hagen, violas and Brian Snow, cello.
