RAWdance presents the 16th installation of the CONCEPT series, a celebrated, cozy showcase of contemporary dance. Returning to the Joe Goode Annex, the series promises to fulfill your cravings for quality dance art while keeping your belly full of popcorn.
The CONCEPT series: 16 presents an electric lineup of top-notch creative talent. KT Nelson, with collaborative dancers Vanessa Thiessen and Dudley Flores, presents "reframe", reconstructing a work originally commissioned by Nicole Paiement and the Blue Print Series at SF Conservatory of Music. Sharing excerpts from their recent premiere of beast, tinypistol, under the direction of Maurya Kerr, digs into the concept of the "anti-pretty", dismantling conventional understandings of beauty by exalting the grace within the "ugly". Recent Bay Area transplants Lauren Simpson and Jenny Stulberg strive to balance the strictly formal with the deeply personal as they perform a duet of sensory-driven physicality, simplicity, playfulness, and honesty. Katerina Wong presents a new work that acknowledges the value of language and storytelling, with a score of live vocal percussion and recorded folk music sung in endangered languages. Rounding out the program is GERALDCASELDANCE, a company whose work is meticulously constructed, emotionally charged, and rich with metaphor. Host RAWdance revives and reimagines their 2012 8-hr installation, "Two by 24: Love on Loop", highlighting universal themes of love and acceptance.
RAWdance was awarded a 2014 Goldie from the SF Bay Guardian, in large part in recognition of the vitality of the CONCEPT series. "An old-fashioned salon of serious fun but also serious art, the series has become one of the most congenial places to watch dance in SF." Critical Dance chimed in on CONCEPT series: 14, "A packed house, cozy performance environment, engaging choreography, yummy snacks, genuine and inviting hosts... an evening of modern dance doesn't get much better than this."
