Philippe Jestin's complex stencils filled with hand-tinted resin produce clean, modern caricatures of people and place.
POUR LINES - solo show featuring Philippe Jestin Reception: Dec 3, 2014 6pm - 8pm exhibit open daily, 24 / 7 through Jan 13, 2015
"In my work I often use drawings relating to the human figure, lines around the body, fabric structures applied to the body," shares Philippe Jestin. "My goal is to produce an object offering different lectures between the figurative and the abstract, going back and forth, unresolved and open to the potential of a fluid perception. The finished work has a sculptural dimension with a decisive edge much like in a bas-relief."
The artist works with wood, metal, paper, wire and charcoals. One material constant in his works is the resin which is applied with different casting techniques, often born out of experimentation and necessity to bring forth the initial idea. Each stencil is meticulously hand cut from a silicon sheet, with the voids then carefully filled with hand-tinted resin. Within the process of creation and the resulting die-cast appearance of his finished works lies the dichotomy in the creative brilliance for which his work is revered: the final form belies the hidden craft of production. Philippe explains,"As a visual artist I am open to different series of work, keeping the creative process fluid, open to a variety of ideas and explorations, unattached to a partcular style, the challenge I seek is in the nature of the craft."
