The Holly King is at his peak at the Winter Solstice. Celebrate our beloved green earth and the birth of the new light with us at this ancient holiday time.
Join Rev. Karyl Huntley and the Golden Gate Center for Spiritual Living to welcome the return of the light in the most elaborate Winter Solstice Celebration on the West Coast.
Enjoy a Modern Interpretation of The Ancient Holiday. The Golden Gate Center for Spiritual Living presents "Celebrating the Spirit of Green Man: A Winter Solstice Celebration" on Saturday, December 20th at the Corte Madera Recreation Center.
There will be the Story of the Green Man, a shamanic journey, candles, singing, music by Bodhi Setchko and Friends, drumming, a winter fire rite, a release of the old and a claiming of the new. All are welcome. Whether we know it or not, in this dark time of year we are waiting for the sun to return, as our ancestors did for so many thousands of years. It is no wonder that the Winter Solstice, the moment when the increased darkening stops and the lengthening of the daylight hours begins, was the most joyous holiday of the ancient calendar. The name for this celebration has come down to us as "Yule." The word is from the Norse Landers and means "wheel."
Our ancestors thought of the year as a wheel, season following season. The personification of the changing seasons is depicted in many ancient traditions as the Green Man: Osiris in Egypt, Pan in Greece, Jack-in-the- Green in Britain, the Oak and Holly Kings in Celtic tradition, to name a few. Yule is the time of rebirth and the Green Man celebrates with us. No wonder the time of the reborn sun was the most joyous celebration of the year.
