Opening reception February 6, 2015, 6-8 p.m., exhibition February 6 to March 14
San Francisco, February 6, 2015: Wilson Art Service in conjunction with The Sandra Lee Gallery is proud to present Walter Quirt: Revolutions Unseen, coordinated by Travis Wilson. This exhibition features paintings spanning from 1939 through 1968, exploring the ascension of Walter Quirt's work from his Social Surrealists paintings of the 1930's-40's to the large gestural canvases of the 1960's.
A catalogue with an introduction by Peter Selz, Curator Emerita of the department of painting and sculpture exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and founder of the Berkeley Art Museum, will accompany the show. An opening reception will be held at the Sandra Lee Gallery February 6, 2015 from 6-8 p.m.
By the early 1940's Walter Quirt's (1902-1968) background as a Social Realist, WPA muralist and cultural revolutionary had led to the creation of a radical series of paintings in a new style. These works were at once a protest and powerful signpost indicating the future direction of American art. As his evolution continued Quirt's work took on a gestural quality that led to larger paintings focused on base emotion. These paintings put Quirt's considerable knowledge of the human condition on full display. In addition to other institutions, Walter Quirt's work can currently be found in the permanent collection of the SFMoMA, NYMoMA, Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
This exhibition will feature 25 oils spanning from 1939 to 1964. Including a large body of seminal works from the 1940's. This will be the largest exhibition of Walter Quirt's since 1979.
It's great a honor to showcase Walter Quirt's work at Sandra Lee Gallery, This exhibition encompasses many movements of self-expression throughout the last century, many of which share familiar themes to work produced by contemporary artists. Don't miss this opportunity to get in-depth perspective of a master's work.
