Concerts on the Slope presents Composer-in-Residence Robert Sirota's Triptych, Ravel's Quartet in F Major, and a rare performance of Theodore Wiprud's String Quartet No. 2, "Intimations and Incarnations," programmed by Sirota and performed by violinists Sarah Koenig-Plonskier and Karen Dekker, violist Michael Davis, and Artistic Director of Concerts on the Slope, cellist Benjamin Larsen. Concerts on the Slope are open to the public and no tickets are required a free will donation is suggested.
Robert Sirota's Triptych was written to commemorate the victims of September 11, 2001. It had an emotional first performance by the Chiara String Quartet on September 26, 2002, at Trinity Church on Wall Street, one of the churches on the periphery of Ground Zero. The Chiara Quartet's 2004 recording of Triptych received high critical acclaim. Fanfare wrote, "There's a sincerity to this string quartet that will give it...staying power. The music is heartfelt and honest."
New York-based composer Theodore Wiprud's two-movement "Intimations and Incarnations" was inspired by the reredos at the Church of the Ascension in New York City, especially the mural by John LaFarge, framing by Stanford White, and sculptural angels by Saint-Gaudens. The piece was premiered there in 2001 by the FLUX Quartet as part of a theatrical concert called Beyond Words.
The 2014-2015 Concerts on the Slope season includes 14 concerts from August through July, performed by some of New York's most talented up-and-coming musicians and ensembles including the Elmyr Quartet, Sandbox Percussion, ETHEL violinist Tema Watstein, and many more, as well as ensembles from out of town such as Orange County's Trio Celeste and Margaret Brouwer's Cleveland-based Blue Streak Ensemble. Artistic Director and cellist Benjamin Larsen has worked with Robert Sirota to create a cohesive yet stylistically diverse program for each concert.
