Music Director Joana Carneiro and Berkeley Symphony continue the 2014-2015 season with the world premiere of Jake Heggie's Camille Claudel: Into the Fire for Orchestra and Mezzo-Soprano. Originally written as a song cycle for string quartet and mezzo-soprano, a new version of this work was commissioned by Berkeley Symphony for full orchestra. Mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke makes her debut appearance with the orchestra as soloist. The evening opens with Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, with Brahms' Symphony No. 4 completing the program.
Internationally-renowned composer Jake Heggie is beloved by Bay Area audiences having written numerous works for local institutions, including commissioned operas Dead Man Walking (San Francisco Opera) and To Hell and Back (Philharmonia Baroque), in addition to his cello concerto Holy Firm (Oakland East Bay Symphony). His works have received multiple productions throughout five continents and his compositional output includes more than 250 songs, as well as chamber and orchestral works. The string quartet and mezzo-soprano version of Camille Claudel: Into the Fire was commissioned by San Francisco Performances in celebration of the Alexander String Quartet's 30th Anniversary and premiered in San Francisco in 2012 with Joyce DiDonato as soloist.
Grammy-award winning mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke is sought after by leading orchestras, opera companies and chamber ensembles throughout the world. Versatile in both standard classical repertoire and contemporary works, Sasha Cooke triumphed in her San Francisco Opera summer 2013 appearance in Mark Adamo's The Gospel of Mary Magdalene. Ms. Cooke has appeared with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Chicago Symphony opera companies including the Metropolitan Opera, Seattle Symphony and English National Opera and recital series at Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall and San Francisco Performances.
