San Francisco Performances presents the debut of young virtuoso violist Lawrence Power with Simon Crawford-Phillips on piano. This rare viola recital takes place Thursday, March 5, 7:30pm at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, San Francisco.
Power and Crawford's program juxtaposes some of the best known works of the viola literature (York Bowen's Phantasy and Schumann's Marchenbilder) with transcriptions of Russian classics (selections from Shostakovich's The Gadfly and Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, both arranged by Vadim Borisovsky) and a US premiere of PowerPlay by English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, whose extensive chamber music output surprises those who know his opera Anna Nicole.
Lawrence Power is one of the foremost violists today and has been on the shortlist for the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist Award. His "eloquent playing, and his ability to transform the most commonplace phrase into something magically eloquent and memorable" (The Guardian, UK) and his "honeyed viola" (The Times) have heralded an incandescent early career for this English performer. It is an extraordinary event when a powerfully charismatic violist bucks the trend of more familiar string soloists and ventures forth into international attention.
Power plays a rare viola by the Bolognese maker Antonio Brensi from c.1610. He is International Professor of Viola at the Zurich Hochschule der Kunst and is founder and Artistic Director of the West Wycombe Chamber Music Festival.
The full program for March 5 is as follows:
YORK BOWEN: Phantasy SCHUMANN: Marchenbilder, Op. 113 SHOSTAKOVICH: Suite from The Gadfly MARK-ANTHONY TURNAGE: PowerPlay (US Premiere) PROKOFIEV: Five Pieces from Romeo and Juliet
