Beautiful mutants, dough-faced sculptures, mysterious manifestos, 30,000 handmade postcards-such is the strange and wondrous world of celebrated artist Mark Mothersbaugh. Cofounder of the New Wave band DEVO, Mothersbaugh moves seamlessly between mediums, creating bold, surrealist works that playfully explore the relationship between technology and individuality.
In the most comprehensive presentation of his work to date, Mark Mothersbaugh: Myopia features a lifetime of his creative inventions, including early postcards, screen prints, decals, and DEVO ephemera, as well as later paintings, photographs, sculptures, and even rugs. This fantastically illustrated book-a portal into a multidimensional universe of art-reveals the work of a true visionary and positions Mothersbaugh as a pivotal figure in the history of contemporary art and indie culture.
In this special event, Mark Mothersbaugh is joined by Adam Lerner, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, for a special one-on-one conversation about Mothersbaugh's life and art. Adam Lerner put together a major retrospective of Mothersbaugh's art, which is currently at the MCA Denver and will travel to five more cities over the next two years.
"For forty years Mark Mothersbaugh has set about creating a body of work that amounts to his own Magic Kingdom, where the visitor is amused and frightened, often simultaneously." -Wes Anderson, from the foreword to Mark Mothersbaugh: Myopia
