Janam features: Dan Auvil, percussion and kaval Tom Farris, laouto and guitar Juliana Graffagna, vocals and accordion Gari Hegedus, oud, saz, mandocello and violin and Lila Sklar, violin and vocals.
"An innovative ensemble that explores a dizzying range of styles, from Appalachia and Asia Minor to Eastern Europe. The sextet plays swirling, hard-driving music that always seems to end up in unexpected places." SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
"This fine group goes on a world tour of Eastern Europe...with no cultural jet lag." SANTA BARBARA INDEPENDENT
The Redwood Tango Ensemble is an energetic tango sextet from San Francisco. The ensemble plays traditional Argentine tango with transcriptions and arrangements of the classic "golden era" orchestras of the 30's, 40's and 50's, primarily working in the styles of Troilo, Di Sarli, D'Arienzo, and Pugliese. The group also ventures into the concert pieces and nuevo-tango of Astor Piazzolla, Sexteto Mayor, and modern ensembles around the world. Their signature is a growing repertoire of original compositions written in the style of the classic orchestras, entirely danceable, but singular and alive.
"Truly one of the most exciting tango ensembles active in the US today." - Morgan Luker Reed College
