Sandra Lee Gallery is proud to announce Ruminations on Pop Art, a two-person show of works by Michael Brennan and Vincent Serritella. Both artists were grand-prize winners in the 2014 show Real and Surreal, which was juried by Dewitt Cheng. This exhibition gives audiences a unique view into the works of two artists who both confront and play with our perceptions of pop culture and contemporary life.
Vincent Seritella's work draws on Pop Art and our sense of space, focusing on areas of the deeply personal that Pop Art generally eschewed. In his art Serritella juxtaposes split-screen style spaces, opening doors not onto public discourses on war or consumerism, but rather onto his perceptions of the relationship between the inner life of erotic compulsion and its potentially invigorating aggressiveness. These divisions and repetitions are Serritella's way of drawing attention to how we imagine space, and the nebulous parameters between dream, intrusion, aversion, and surrender.
Michael Brennan's art uses iconic symbols, such as Superman or Marilyn Monroe, infused with visceral imagery to provoke thoughts on irony and American culture. Brennan grew up "always drawing," and by the third grade he had become fascinated by oil painting and drawing. A Salvador Dali art book became one of Michael's first resources, and as a budding young artist it sealed his love of art. For Michael, the origin of a painting or mural might begin with a simple sketch on a cocktail napkin. These ideas then evolve into complex ruminations, which often reference Americana, pop culture, and the duality of public and private identities.
Brennan's and Serritella's art both play with popular and recognizable imagery to make powerful statements. For the audience, there is something both deeply personal as well as broad and popular to be revealed in each piece.
