Sarah Bush Dance Project will bring Rocked By Women to the beautiful Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts Theater in Downtown Oakland over Mother's Day Weekend. Rocked By Women is a 75-minute dance theater performance with an original music score and video projections. The choreography weaves hip hop, modern, ballet and contact improvisation to tell the story of a woman's journey of growing up, coming out, falling in love and experiencing heartbreak.
This bold, vivacious new performance is choreographed by Sarah Bush, acclaimed by the San Francisco Chronicle as "a force to be reckoned with." Rocked By Women celebrates the positive impact of lesbian musicians, feminists and activists from the Women's Music Movement. Composed by Julie Wolf, the compilation of songs features music by women from the 70s to the 00s including Cris Williamson, Tracy Chapman, Joan Jett, Queen Latifah, Bikini Kill, Ani DiFranco, and Missy Elliott.
Originally commissioned by Queer Cultural Center for National Queer Arts Festival in 2011, Rocked By Women was co-produced at the African-American Art & Culture Complex in San Francisco before a sold-out audience. In 2014, Sarah began an exciting collaboration with playwright and theater director Becca Wolff to shape a strong dramatic arc for the show. This re-conceived Rocked By Women was praised by The Huffington Post as a "monumental work, which would reverberate just as powerfully in an opera house as it did in the intimate Dance Mission Theater." The Sarah Bush Dance Project now brings the newest incarnation to the heart of Oakland.
