Info:
The Cypress String Quartet concludes its 2014-15 Salon Series at the charming Kanbar Performing Arts Center.
Salon Series concerts offer audiences the opportunity to experience chamber music in an up-close-and-personal, exhilarating format, with informative introductions to the music given by members of the quartet at each concert. This year, the Cypress explores three pairings of early and middle Beethoven string quartets in concerts that will run approximately two hours and culminate with chocolate and a tasting of exceptional German and Alsatian wines provided by Dee Vine Wines.
In addition to music by Beethoven, each Salon program features a work inspired by the theme of "night." The final Salon Series concerts in May will feature additional performances of a new quartet commissioned through the Cypress Quartet's annual Call & Response program - Philippe Hersant's String Quartet No. 4. The Cypress just gave the world premiere of the piece on April 10 at Marines Memorial Theatre, and is so enthusiastic about the new work that they are programming repeat performances. The Hersant will be paired with Beethoven's Op. 18, No. 6 and his Op. 59, No. 3.
Known for its elegant performances, the Cypress String Quartet has been praised by Gramophone for its "artistry of uncommon insight and cohesion," and its sound has been called "beautifully proportioned and powerful" by The Washington Post. The Cypress Quartet was formed in San Francisco in 1996, and during its initial rehearsals the group created a signature sound through intense readings of J.S. Bach's Chorales. Built up from the bottom register of the quartet and layered like a pyramid, the resulting sound is clear and transparent, allowing the texture of the music to be discerned immediately.
