Joana Carneiro and Berkeley Symphony conclude the 2014-2015 season on April 30 at 8 pm, with a performance of two monumental works for chorus: Mozart's Requiem Mass in D minor and John Adams' Choruses from The Death of Klinghoffer. San Francisco Opera Adler Fellows Jacqueline Piccolino (soprano), Zanda v?de (mezzo-soprano), Michael Dailey (tenor) and Anthony Reed (bass) are featured as soloists for the Mozart. The University and Chamber Choruses of the University of California, Berkeley, will join the orchestra for both works.
The 1991 premiere of Berkeley native John Adams' opera The Death of Klinghoffer was met with controversy on account of its subject matter. The story recounts the 1985 terrorist hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro which resulted in the tragic murder of Leon Klinghoffer, a wheelchair-bound Jewish American. Commissioned by a consortium of opera companies that included the San Francisco Opera, Klinghoffer, Adams' second opera, was created in collaboration with stage director Peter Sellars and librettist Alice Goodman, both of whom worked with Adams on his first opera, Nixon in China. Despite elements of controversy, this work is considered "one of Mr. Adams's most inspired and personal scores" (The New York Times).
"It is a great delight to have my music performed by both Berkeley Symphony and Maestra Joana Carneiro in my home town," says John Adams. "Joana has championed much of my music across Europe and her work here with such a dedicated group of musicians paves the way for the music of today."
