Info:
Brimming with music and information and packed with history and humor, this popular Saturday morning series has brought together the award-winning Alexander String Quartet and music historian Robert Greenberg for more than two decades. These concerts present performances of complete works surrounded by illuminating talks about the history and times of their composers.
The Alexander String Quartet has performed in the major music capitals of five continents, securing its standing among the world's premier ensembles over nearly three decades. Widely admired for its interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart and Shostakovich, the quartet has also established itself as an important advocate of new music through over twenty-five commissions and numerous premiere performances. The Alexander String Quartet is a major artistic presence in its home base of San Francisco, serving there as directors of the Morrison Chamber Music Center at the School of Music and Dance in the College of Arts and Humanities at San Francisco State University and Ensemble in Residence of San Francisco Performances.
ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE In the ten years that followed his arrival in Vienna, until his death in 1791, Mozart composed more masterworks in more genres than any other composer before or since.
The tragedy of Mozart's early death is compounded by the fact that during the last years of his life, his music acquired an entirely new level of intensity: polyphonic intensity developmental intensity and waste-not-a-single note expressive intensity. And while we cannot know where Mozart's muse might have taken him had he lived a longer life, we do know that the late quartets and quintets in this series stand as pre-eminent examples of his mature-and transcendent-musical voice.
PROGRAM 4: MAY 9 with Charith Premawardhana, viola Quartet in F Major, K. 590 Viola Quintet in E-flat Major, K. 614
