The Oakland East Bay Symphony and Music Director Michael Morgan conclude their 2014-2015 season with "all the best in the best of all possible worlds" in the form of Leonard Bernstein's masterful and droll take on Voltaire's biting, farcical satire, Candide, which will be given one performance only Friday, May 15, at 8 pm at the Paramount Theatre, 2025 Broadway in Oakland. The Symphony and Maestro Morgan will be joined in the concert performance by the Oakland Symphony Chorus and soloists. For tickets and information, visit www.oebs.org .
Candide is recognized as both the Enlightenment philosopher's and 20th century American composer's magnum opus. Its publication in France in 1756 caused a scandal that led to its being banned and resulted in virtually instant popularity. Following its premiere in 1956 as a comic opera by Leonard Bernstein with libretto originally by playwright Lillian Hellman, it has become one of the most important and lauded and popular works of the American musical theater tradition.
The Oakland East Bay Symphony performance will feature soloists Thomas Glenn, tenor (Candide) Shawnette Sulker, soprano (Cunegonde) Robert Sims, baritone (Pangloss/Martin) Hadleigh Adams, baritone (Maximillian) Tami Dahbura, mezzo-soprano (Old Lady) Katy Stephan soprano (Paquette) plus J. Raymond Meyers, tenor Jonathan Smucker, tenor Ryan Bradford, baritone Matthew Lovell, baritone Christopher Fernandez, tenor and the Oakland Symphony Chorus, Lynne Morrow, Music Director.
