Visionary Dance Theatre closes their 5th anniversary season with their spring dance concert titled "New Skins" at the Visionary Performance Space (7202 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, CA 92115) on May 22nd-23rd, 2015 at 8pm. This concert features the choreographic works of New Mexico native and Assistant Artistic Director Martin Anthony Dorado. Experience dance movement from multiple angles, in the round, as this concert is staged in an arena-like stage instead of the classic theater stage. Additionally, join us for a wine reception and special pre-performance at 7:30pm both evenings by Kidz Danz Kompany, San Diego's first children's modern dance company, and VYT.
"Depart Arrive" is an extension of a piece Mr. Dorado created in his final years at New Mexico State University titled "Cast Off". This project depicts a series of events that occur throughout a year's time in various natural settings. With sounds from the outdoors combined with contemporary and classical music from artists such as Olafur Arnalds, Nick Wales, Sigur Ros and Max Richter, this serene story-telling piece seeks to delightfully remind audience members of seasonal memories of growth and decay, childhood, young love, and moving forward.
"Rise..." is a premiere piece of Mr. Dorado that features epic, fast-paced, dramatic, athletic ensemble dance. In times of turmoil and disorder this piece depicts the idea of community at its best whereas some groups of people believe in survival of the fittest Mr. Dorado suggests there are power, strength, and hope in numbers. This piece also portrays individuals rising against the odds with various outcomes. Music for "Rise..." is an eclectic collection of contemporary and soundtrack scores by musicians such as Daft Punk, Craig Armstrong, and Christopher Young.
