Our final concert for this season is an all-secular program, The Natural World. The pieces are primarily a cappella, but some will be accompanied by piano, both two and four hands. As you might expect from the title, we will sing about subjects found in nature - birds, flowers, gardens, animals, insects and water. Especially water.
The highlight of the concert is Water, Making Everything New, an a cappella composition for 8 voices by Sanford Dole, BCG Artistic Director, commissioned and performed by Pacific Mozart Ensemble in 2010. The piece is based on "He Na Tye Woman" by Paula Gunn Allen, a poet with Native American ancestry, and published in her Shadow Country anthology.
Other works include Orlando Gibbons' The Silver Swan and Charles Stanford's The Bluebird, Lauridsen's Les Chansons des Roses, Delius' To be sung of a summer night on the water, and songs about bees, butterflies, spiders, and llamas! We also explore a day in the life of an ant with Departmental, composed by Robert A. M Ross, from a poem by Robert Frost. Scored for SATB with rollicking four-hand piano, it's engaging, humorous, and great fun!
The full program is listed on the BCG Concerts page. Please join us 30 minutes before each performance for Sanford's pre-concert lecture. It's a great way to learn more about the individual composers and their works.
Tickets for all concerts are available online or at the door of each concert location.
