Grown Women Dance Collective is proud to present their 6th annual concert, "Fallen Heroes, Rising Stars: A Juneteenth Celebration Through Dance."
The performers in this uplifting show are retired dancers, aka "grown women," in their 40s and 50s, many of whom were trained at the highly-acclaimed Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York. "True all-stars of the dance world come together each June for this concert, to create the perfect combination of performing arts & education. Our performance honors Juneteenth, an important homage to the end of slavery in the US, and we pay tribute to African-American music artists who we have recently lost, but who will continue to inspire us for generations to come," says Tonya Marie Amos, Artistic Director for GWDC. "This is a fun, inspiring and family-friendly evening of dance, music & American history."
The dance line-up this year features Mindy Haywood who honors Etta James Kevin Boseman will be dancing to the songs of Ray Charles Tonya & Daddy honor Luther Vandross Aliyah Yasmine-Bint Hassan Kent & Daniel Marshall perform to the music of Lisa Left Eye Michael Medcalf with music by Michael Jackson Renee Monique Brown dances to the iconic James Brown Germaul Gee Barnes will honor Bobby Womack, and the entire ensemble will pay tribute to Maya Angelou and Nina Simone.
Also on display will be Quest For Identity, an exhibit of vintage photographs curated by Robert Scott that documents African Americans after liberation from slavery here in the US.
As part of this year's event, special master-level dance classes are being taught at Aspire Pilates Center for seniors, low-income children and community members suffering from back pain. Many Bay Area businesses have provided generous sponsorship dollars to support the production of this community event, including Travis Credit Union, Balanced Body, 21st Amendment Brewery, and Pittsburg Arts & Community Foundation.
