ACME, the American Contemporary Music Ensemble performs Chamber Music of Timo Andres presented by Miller Theatre at Columbia University as part of Miller's Pop-Up Concerts series. For these free, hour-long performances, Miller Theatre welcomes concertgoers with a complimentary drink and invites them to sit or stand on the stage with the performers, for a truly up-close-and-personal experience. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis, and doors open at 5:30pm.
ACME's concert features music by fast-rising star and ACME pianist Timo Andres, whose music "achieves an unhurried grandeur that has rarely been felt in American music since John Adams came on the scene" (The New Yorker). The program includes Andres' Thrive on Routine for string quartet, commissioned by ACME and inspired by Charles Ives' morning routine of waking up very early, digging in his potato patch, and playing some of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier his Piano Quintet, commissioned by San Francisco Performances, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, and Concertgebouw Amsterdam and built around a four-note figure from canonic passagework in Schumann's Op. 12 Fantasiestucke and the New York premiere of his Clear and Cold for solo piano, a short fantasia on mid-February New England weather and on Ravel's Une barque sur l'ocean.
ACME players for this concert are Caroline Shaw and Ben Russell, violins Caleb Burhans, viola Clarice Jensen, cello and artistic director, and Timo Andres, piano.
