Info:
Cellist Maya Beiser makes her Ojai Music Festival debut in three concerts at the 2015 festival, from June 12-14, 2015. On Friday, June 12, she performs a late night concert at 10:30pm with 2015 Ojai Music Director percussionist Steven Schick at Libbey Bowl.
In this Late Night at the Libbey Bowl concert, Maya joins forces with longtime friend and musical collaborator, 2015 Ojai Music Director Steven Schick. Maya and Steven were both founding members of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, and have worked together since the early 1990s. At Ojai, they perform the first piece they commissioned as a duo - Osvaldo Golijov's heart-wrenching Mariel, for cello and marimba. Maya performs Michael Harrison's Just Ancient Loops with a film created for the music by Bill Morrison. The epic 25-minute piece unveils every aspect of the cello - from its most glorious and mysterious harmonics to earthy, rhythmic pizzicatos - all using "just intonation," an ancient tuning system in which the distances between notes are based upon whole number ratios. The concert also includes the American premiere of Roland Auzet's La Cathedrale de misere, a staged version of Ursonate by poet Kurt Schwitters featuring Steven Schick.
