When Forrest Gander, Robert Hass, Brenda Hillman, J. Michael Martinez, Sharon Olds, and Evie Shockley take the stage on Friday, June 19, audiences should expect anything but an ordinary evening of poetry. For the poets, who comprise the 2015 faculty of the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley Summer Poetry Workshop, the evening kicks off a week of intense creative community activity.
ROBERT HASS, Director of the Poetry Program, is former Poet Laureate of the United States, MacArthur Fellow, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, National Books Critics Circle Award and was the 2014 recipient of the Wallace Stevens Award.
FORREST GANDER is a writer and translator whose recent works include the novel The Trace (New Directions, 2014) and the book of poems Eiko and Koma (New Directions, 2013). His Core Samples from the World (New Directions, 2011) was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
BRENDA HILLMAN has authored nine collections of poetry, and was named by Poets & Writers Magazine as one of "Fifty Inspiring Writers." She was awarded the Academy of American Poets Fellowship for 2012 for Distinguished Poetic Achievement. She will be guest directing the 2015 Poetry Workshop at Squaw Valley.
J. MICHAEL MARTINEZ, a recipient of the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets, is a Ph.D. Candidate in Literature at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His latest book is In the Garden of the Bridehouse (University of Arizona Press, 2014).
SHARON OLDS has received the National Book Critics Circle Award, was a finalist for the National Book Award, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2013 for Stag's Leap (Knopf, 2012).
EVIE SHOCKLEY's poetry collections include the new black (Wesleyan, 2012) and a half red sea (Carolina Wren Press, 2006). She is an Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University -New Brunswick, where she teaches African American literature and creative writing.
